Janelle Stelson

Anchor

Janelle Stelson co-anchors WGAL News 8 at 4 p.m., News 8 at 5 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. and News 8 at 11 p.m. each weeknight.

An Emmy-award winning journalist and the recipient of several Associated Press awards for reporting, Janelle joined WGAL 8-TV in 1997. Her broadcasting experience includes covering stories both nationally and internationally.

Janelle's first job was writing speeches at the Embassy of Egypt in Washington, D.C.

Her journalism career began at WHTM-TV in Harrisburg, as a Reporter and Weather Anchor. In 1989 she moved to Miami to work for WPLG-TV, where she covered everything from hurricanes, to Haitian riots, and one of the biggest drug busts in U.S. history. Janelle returned to the Susquehanna Valley to anchor the 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts for WHP-TV in Harrisburg. She also worked with WITF public radio, hosted a statewide public television broadcast with the governor of Pennsylvania and anchored "Computer Chronicles" on PBS.

Born in Fairbanks, Alaska, Janelle grew up in the Seattle area of Washington state.

She graduated from the University of Puget Sound with a degree in Politics and Government. She also studied international politics and advanced German language at the Austro-American Institute in Vienna, Austria.

Among Janelle's most memorable stories: Traveling to Kosovo to chronicle the PA National Guard's involvement and a Lancaster County General who was in charge of the NATO Peacekeeping forces there. And flying over the still smoldering twin towers in New York City in an open military helicopter after the September 11th attacks, to deliver supplies.

Because of Janelle's educational and family background (Grandfather in the diplomatic corps, after serving in the FBI... Grandmother worked in the White House... Parents both worked on campaigns in Washington State), she especially enjoys politics-- having covered every US President since Jimmy Carter (he was already out of office, working with Habitat for Humanity in Miami).

Among her favorite interviews: British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, Senator and presidential contender John McCain, President Joe Biden in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic... and Paul McCartney!

Janelle's strong commitment to the community includes speaking to numerous groups, serving on the board of directors for the Humane League of Lancaster County, and working closely with the American Cancer Society and American Red Cross among other organizations. The annual reader poll for Senior News of Lancaster County and Dauphin County have repeatedly named Janelle "Best News Anchor."
