Joe Calhoun

Meteorologist

Joe Calhoun is the WGAL News 8 Storm Team's chief meteorologist and does forecasts weekdays on WGAL News 8 at 5, 5:30, 6, WGAL News 8 at 10 on MeTV Susquehanna Valley, WGAL 8.2, and News 8 at 11 p.m. Since joining the staff of WGAL 8 in August 1987, he has become one of the area's favorite weathercasters known for his accurate and personable forecasts.

Joe grew up in Philadelphia and graduated from Frankford High School in 1976. He enrolled at the Ogontz Campus, now Abington, of Penn State University and attained his bachelor's of science degree in meteorology in 1981 at University Park.

He began his career as a meteorologist in 1982, working for Freese-Notis Weather, Inc. in Des Moines, Iowa. He later began his broadcasting career as the morning and weekend meteorologist at KETV in Omaha, Neb.

While at KETV, Joe co-produced a 30-minute severe weather safety and awareness program titled, "When the Siren Sounds," which won the Ak-Sar-Ben Gold Award, presented by the Nebraska Broadcasters Association. The program was also nominated for the Iris Award by the National Association of Television Program Executives.

He is a member of the American Meteorological Society and was awarded the Seal of Approval for Television Weathercasting in May 1984.

He enjoys golf, cooking, spending time with his family and rooting for the Penn State and Philadelphia ball clubs.
