Trooper shot and killed in Juniata County
GERARD WGAL AL NEWS 8 STATE POLICE ARE GIVING US A TIMELINE OF WHAT HAPPENED IN SEVERAL LOCATIONS. THIS ALL STARTED AROUND 11:00 YESTERDAY MORNING. POLICE SAY THAT’S WHEN THE SHOOTER, 38 YEAR OLD BRANDON STEIN OF THOMPSON TOWN, JUNIATA COUNTY, GOT TO THE STATE POLICE BARRACKS IN LEWISTOWN, FIRING SEVERAL SHOTS INTO PATROL CARS, THEN TAKING OFF IN HIS TRUCK. POLICE THEN STARTED A MANHUNT FOR STEIN AROUND 1245. LIEUTENANT JAMES WAGNER FOUND STEIN IN MIFFLIN TOWN ON WASHINGTON AVENUE. POLICE SAY STEIN SHOT THE TROOPER. SEVERAL PEOPLE CAME TO WAGNER’S AID USING THE POLICE RADIO IN THE TROOPER’S CAR TO CALL FOR MORE POLICE AND FIRST RESPONDER. STEIN IS AGAIN ON THE RUN. THE MANHUNT CONTINUES FROM THE GROUND AND THE AIR. POLICE SAY STEIN WAS PLAYING WHAT THEY CALLED A CAT AND MOUSE GAME, CALLING 911 FROM A LOCATION. BUT WHEN POLICE ARRIVED, HE WAS NOT THERE, SETTING THEM UP FOR AN AMBUSH. THEN IN THE AREA OF SWAMP ROAD AND BAUMGARDNER DRIVE, POLICE SAY STEIN FIRED AND HIT TROOPER JACK RUSSO THROUGH THE WINDSHIELD. POLICE SAY SOME TROOPERS CARS HIT PARKED CARS BECAUSE THEY WERE BAILING OUT OF THEIR CRUISERS WHILE UNDER FIRE. STEIN AGAIN TAKES OFF AND ENDED UP NEAR THE PARKING LOT OF HARSH BURGERS SUB AND MALT. WHAT I WITNESSED AND I WILL TELL YOU IN MY MANY YEARS WITH THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE POLICE AND MANY SERIOUS SITUATIONS, WAS ONE OF THE MOST INTENSE, UNBELIEVABLE GUNFIGHTS. I HAVE EVER WITNESSED. THE SUSPECT, BRANDON STEIN, WAS SHOT AND KILLED. I WOULD ESTIMATE HUNDREDS OF ROUNDS EXCHANGED AND THE ONLY ANALOGY I COULD DRAW IS A WAR ZONE. IT WAS IT WAS THAT INTENSE. BUT THAT WAS THE ONLY WAY THEY COULD PREVENT HIM FROM BECOMING A THREAT, MORE OF A THREAT TO THOSE CIVILIANS. TROOPERS SAY THEY HAVE NO MOTIVE FOR THE SHOOTING AND THAT STEIN WAS CARRYING A 458 MAGNUM CALIBER RIFLE USED FOR LARGE GAME HUNTING. THEY SAY IT WAS SUCH A LARGE CALIBER IT WOULD DEFEAT ANY BODY
