Doctor arranges big surprise for 6-year-old who had NFL jersey cut off during medical emergency
WITH THAT JERSEY. OUR JOHN ATWATER EXPLAINS. THIS SIX YEAR OLD DELAWARE BOY IS RECOVERING AFTER A ROUGH FALL ON THE PLAYGROUND. A FEW WEEKS AGO. REMEMBER FALLING OFF BACKWARDS? THAT SEVEN FOOT TUMBLE FRACTURED ASHTON’S ARM. THERE WERE CONCERN HE’D HAVE THEY’D HAVE TO AMPUTATE HIS HAND. BUT IT WASN’T THE PAINFUL BREAK THAT BROUGHT TEARS TO HIS EYES. THE ONLY TIME HE CRIED WHEN WE GOT TO THE HOSPITAL WAS WHEN THEY CUT HIS JERSEY OFF. IT WAS HIS LOVE FOR THE PATRIOTS AND THE LOSS OF HIS TOM BRADY JERSEY. SO THEY CUT THE SLEEVE FIRST AND THEN CUT THE WHOLE THING OFF. HE HADN’T CRIED FROM HIS FRACTURE, BUT HE CRIED WHEN THEY CUT HIS JERSEY OFF THROUGH HOURS OF SURGERY. DR. E.J. CADENCE THEN SAVED HIS HAND, BUT HE KNEW THAT WOULDN’T BE ENOUGH FOR THIS DIE HARD FAN. I SAID, OH MY GOSH, I’M AN EAGLES COUNTRY AND I GOT A NEW PATRIOTS FAN AND I SPENT 20 YEARS WORKING AND TRAINING IN BOSTON. THE DOCTOR MADE A FEW CALLS. HEY, ASHTON, IT’S MAC JONES HERE AND ASHTON’S FAVORITE TEAM CAME THROUGH. WE HAVE A BAG FOR YOU TO OPEN HERE. WE’RE GOING TO MAKE SURE WE GET YOU A NEW JERSEY. SO I DID SIGN ONE FOR YOU. GLAD YOU ARE DOING BETTER. HERE IS A NEW JERSEY FOR YOU. SO I GRAB THAT IS AN AUTOGRAPH. ASHTON’S RECOVERY IS STILL GOING TO TAKE A FEW WEEKS, BUT THE TEARS ARE GONE. THANK YOU, MAC. AND NOW HE HAS A NEW FAVORITE QUARTERBACK. NOW, I LIKE MAC BECAUSE TOM BRADY’S RETIRED. THANK YOU, MAC JONES.

Ashton Turmel, a 6-year-old from Delaware, fractured his arm when he fell 7 feet while at a playground a few weeks ago.

"I remember falling off backwards," Ashton said.

Unfortunately, Ashton also ruptured a major artery in that same arm.

"They were concerned they would have to amputate his hand," said Ashton's mother.

The painful break, however, did not bring tears to Ashton's eyes. Instead, it was his love for the Patriots and the loss of the Tom Brady jersey he was wearing.

"The only time he cried when we got to the hospital was when they cut the jersey off," Ashton's mother said. "So they cut the sleeve first and cut the whole thing off."

Dr. E.J. Caterson, of Nemours Children's Hospital in Wilmington, was able to save Ashton's hand after hours of surgery. But being a Patriots fan himself, Caterson knew that saving Ashton's hand wouldn't be enough for the fellow die-hard New England fan.

"I said: 'Oh my gosh. I'm in Eagles country and I've got a New England Patriots fan, and I spent 20-plus years working and training in Boston," said Caterson, who has worked at Massachusetts General, Brigham and Women's and Boston Children's hospitals in the past.

Caterson made a few calls on Ashton's behalf and the Patriots organization ended up sending a signed Mac Jones jersey and a personal message from the quarterback to the young fan.

"Now I like Mac Jones because Tom Brady's retired," Ashton said.

Ashton's recovery is still going to take a few weeks, but thanks to Caterson, Jones and the Patriots, his tears are gone.
