Senators game, 5K postponed in Harrisburg due to air quality
The Harrisburg Senators had to postpone their game against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on Wednesday due to the bad air quality in the Susquehanna Valley.
"I mean, outside, it looks so nice," said Harrisburg Senators President Kevin Kulp.
The temperature was in the 70s and the sun was out Wednesday but it wasn't easy to see through the smoky air.
"The players were in agreement, the coaches, everybody," Kulp said.
After monitoring the indexes and trends throughout the day, it was pretty apparent that the skies weren't going to turn blue by game time.
"The air quality, it's not worth putting the guys out there running around," Kulp said.
As hard as it was to make, the decision was made to postpone the game.
"We were all in agreement that it was the right thing to do," he said, adding that it's best for the fans as well.
The Senators weren't the only athletes affected.
Wednesday was Global Running Day. Shelly Anselmo, her daughters and hundreds of others were set to compete in the Big Run 5K to celebrate.
They had been training for the last two months.
Unfortunately, the Big Run 5K was canceled because of the air quality.
"There were a lot of runners that maybe this was their first race. So, it was a big deal," Anselmo said.
Although disappointed, Anselmo said nothing will stop her from running, not a cancellation or even smoky skies.
The Senators' game has been postponed to Saturday, June 10.
It is unclear if the Big Run will be rescheduled for a later date.
