PEOPLE LIVING ALONG MAIN STREET IN NEW SALEM, YORK COUNTY LOST POWER AFTER A TREE FELL DOWNING POWER LINES IS AMBER GERARD JOINS US LIVE FROM MAIN STREET WITH THE CLEANUP EFFORTS THERE. AMBER. WELL, IT’S NOT THE NEWS THAT ANYONE REALLY WANTS TO HEAR, BUT IT IS THE ANSWER. SO I SPOKE TO MATT AT AND THEY TELL ME THAT THE POWER WILL MOST LIKELY BE RESTORED EARLY, EARLY TOMORROW MORNING. SO THAT’S WHAT WE KNOW NOW. NOW, YOU CAN SEE RIGHT NOW IT’S REALLY QUIET. HOWEVER, EARLIER TODAY WHEN THIS TREE CAME CRASHING DOWN, LET’S JUST SAY THERE WAS A LOT GOING ON. ALL THE SOUNDS OFTEN HEARD WHEN A CLEANUP IS UNDERWAY. WE JUST SAT DOWN AND ALL OF A SUDDEN I SAW SPARKS AND THE SOUND THAT ACCOMPANIED THEM, THIS OWNER SAYS WAS SO LOUD SHE THOUGHT THE POWER LINE HAD COME THROUGH HER WINDOW. ALL OF A SUDDEN IT WAS JUST LIKE THIS. AND WHEN SHE RUSHED OUTSIDE AND LOOKED TO HER LEFT, WELL, SHE SAW THIS. I WAS LIKE, O-M-G, THE TRUNK OF THIS ENORMOUS 100 YEAR OLD TREE HAD SPLIT IN HALF. ONE HALF FALLING INTO THESE POWER LINES, AND THE POWER WENT OUT. WITNESSES THAT LIVE ON THE PROPERTY WHERE THE TREE IS LOCATED SAID THE WINDS WERE EXTREMELY HEAVY WHEN THE TREE CAME CRASHING DOWN. IT HAPPENED SO QUICKLY THAT ONE DRIVER DIDN’T EVEN HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO REACT. THAT POOR GIRL THAT GOT HER CAR HIT BY THE TREE, SHE PULLED UP OVER HERE AND PUT A HOLE IN HER WINDSHIELD BETWEEN THE WINDSHIELD AND THE FALLEN TREE AND THE SPARKS. OH, MY GOD. I WAS IT WAS NUTS. I, I CAN TOTALLY IMAGINE WHY. AND SHE DOES TELL ME THAT SHE SAW THAT THE GIRL WHO WAS DRIVING THE CAR WAS NOT INJURED. SHE DROVE AWAY HERSELF. NOW, IN TERMS OF THIS, WELL, WHO’S GOING TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR CLEANING THAT UP? THAT WILL BE THE PROPERTY OWNER. SO THEY WILL COME AND CLEAR IT OFF THE SIDEWALK, MOVE IT OVER THERE, AND THEN WELL, THEY WILL HAVE TO DO T

Strong winds split 100-year-old tree in half

People living along Main Street in New Salem, York County, lost power after a tree fell and downed power lines on Tuesday afternoon."I just sat down, and all of a sudden, I saw sparks," a homeowner in the neighborhood said.The homeowner said the noise was so loud, she thought a power line had come through her window."All of a sudden, it was like this — 'pew,'" the homeowner said.When she rushed outside to investigate, she saw the trunk of an enormous 100-year-old tree that had been split in half, with one half falling onto power lines."And the power went out," the homeowner said.Witnesses that live on the property where the tree was located, said the winds were extremely heavy when the tree came crashing down. One driver didn't have enough time to react."The poor girl that got her car hit by the tree, she pulled up here and it put a hole in her windshield," the homeowner said.Witnesses say the driver was able to leave the scene without being assisted, and she was able to drive away herself.As for the fallen tree, the property owner is responsible for clearing it away.
