TO TAKE ADVANTAGE. YOU KNOW, SCAMMERS ARE ALWAYS IN THE MARKET TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF CURRENT EVENTS. AND FOR VERMONT’S NOW. THE 8 ON YOUR SIDE TEAM HAS BEEN TELLING YOU ABOUT BILLING PROBLEMS WITH PEOPLE ELECTRIC UTILITIES. SO IT SHOULDN’T SURPRISE YOU THAT WE’RE HEARING FROM VIEWERS ABOUT A SCAM. CALL TELLING PEOPLE CUSTOMERS THEY’RE GETTING A REFUND. IN FACT, A VIEWER NAMED NANCY TELLS ME THAT SHE RECEIVED THREE OF THESE CALLS IN JUST ONE DAY CLAIMING SHE WAS ABOUT TO BE REFUNDED ANYWHERE FROM 50 TO $100 BECAUSE SHE WAS OVERCHARGED, CHARGED ON HER ELECTRIC BILL. BUT IN ORDER FOR ME TO GET IT, I MUST GIVE THEM MY CREDIT CARD NUMBER OR MY BANK ACCOUNT NUMBER. NO DOUBT ABOUT IT, FOLKS, THIS IS A SCAM. IT’S DESIGNED TO GET YOUR ACCOUNT NUMBERS. WE ACTUALLY CHECKED WITH PEOPLE AND THEY TELL US THAT ANY REFUNDS TO CUSTOMERS WOULD ACTUALLY COME IN THE FORM OF A CREDIT ON YOUR ELECTRIC BILL. AND WHILE MANY PEOPLE CUSTOMERS CONTINUE TO BE FRUSTRATED WITH THE UTILITY’S ONGOING BILLING ISSUES, DO NOT FALL FOR THIS SCAM, CALL THINKING IT’S AN EASY PATH TO RECOVER YOUR MONEY. I’M BRIA

For months now, the News 8 On Your Side team has been investigating billing problems with PPL – one of the largest electric utilities in the state.And if something is important to consumers, scammers will notice and take advantage.Viewers are now telling us about a scam call telling PPL customers they're getting a refund.One woman said she received three of these calls in just one day, claiming she was about to be refunded anywhere from $50 to $100 because she was overcharged on her electric bill."But in order for me to get it, I must give them my credit card number or my bank account number," she said.This is a scam designed to get your account numbers.We checked with PPL, and it said any refunds to customers would come in the form of a credit on their electric bill.While many PPL customers continue to be frustrated with the utility company's ongoing billing issues, don't fall for this scam call thinking it's an easy path to recover money.

Viewers are now telling us about a scam call telling PPL customers they're getting a refund.

One woman said she received three of these calls in just one day, claiming she was about to be refunded anywhere from $50 to $100 because she was overcharged on her electric bill.

"But in order for me to get it, I must give them my credit card number or my bank account number," she said.

This is a scam designed to get your account numbers.

We checked with PPL, and it said any refunds to customers would come in the form of a credit on their electric bill.

While many PPL customers continue to be frustrated with the utility company's ongoing billing issues, don't fall for this scam call thinking it's an easy path to recover money.
